Kitchen Garden Check In

It’s nice to see the hungry months of March and April long gone

The kitchen garden is loving all this rain. The potatoes and peas are in their final weeks before harvest when they need more water so the timing is perfect.

What we are harvesting right now :
The last of the asparagus
Rhubarb
New potatoes
Snow peas
Spring turnip
Summer turnip
Herbs
Garlic scapes
Lettuces
Spinach
Beets
Thinned onions
Carrots
Borage
Tatsoi

What I am direct sowing this week in zone 6b :
More beets
Interplanting more carrots in my almost ready garlic
The last round of peas
Another round of beans
The last planting of potatoes and onions before fall
(You could do brussel sprouts but we don’t like them and yes, I have even tried them with bacon.)

The seeds I am starting now for planting out the end of July for fall and winter harvest :

Spinach
Tatsoi
Lettuces
Cabbages
Brassicas

One of my favorite spring meals is roasted turnip and beets tossed with thyme and olive oil

There is so much to do before the days get shorter but when the weather is good we just get to the hard work knowing come January we will be so thankful for all the food on the shelves.

Love Jenn xx
