I know lots of chicken farmers, sheep farmers , beef farmers, pig farmers, turkey farmers, wild game hunters, and so many great fishermen here in Nova Scotia.
There are so many options available to us here to eat locally, seasonally and support farmers in this province. There is so much wild game. In fact, too much. These choices are what we have eaten for hundreds of years and what our bodies are used to.
That was the simple answer which came immediately to mind when asked about a grocery store selling kangaroo meat shipped from halfway across the world and being marketed as a cheap alternative to NS beef.
“Sorry, I do not know one single kangaroo meat farmer here in Nova Scotia.”
So why would I put my health, money, and intention there?
Just doesn’t make sense to me.
Allow me a small soapbox moment please:
If we don’t support what we have here locally what do we think is going to happen to it? If we can’t afford something, there are many other options available from NS farmers and fisherman. Delicious, affordable options!
We do not want to be dependent on producers from other countries for so many reasons.
Let’s dig our heels in and tell these stores we would rather have food from local farmers.
Surely there are people in Australia who need that kangaroo meat more than we do.
This is obviously a very nuanced subject however this is simply my point of view from a person who is in the low-mid income range. I feel there are better options.
( also some fun facts :
Kangaroos in Australia are harvested in the wild by hunters with quotas, not actually farmed.
In 1981 there was a huge kangaroo meat mislabeling scandal when it was shipped to the US labeled as beef.
Many young kangaroos, approx 440 000 are orphaned due to their mothers being harvested at the wrong time.)
